Get Ready for the Great Duck's Return

Westport Sunrise Rotary’s Great Duck Race is almost here — Saturday, June 4, 3:30 at Parker Harding Plaza.

Sunny, the race mascot, is floating in the air at the Library. On Friday she’ll take a boat down the Saugatuck River to the Black Duck, where the club will gather for happy hour duck cocktails and dinner the next Thursday. Then Friday she’ll be moved to the bridge near Parker Harding Plaza through the end of the Race.

Race Day will be an afternoon of family fun on the Saugatuck River — duck decorating, face painting, games and crafts for the kids, a bouncy castle, the Maker Faire Nerdy Derby, and glitter tattoos.  And food and drink!

The Duck Race has a simple purpose, to raise money the club donates to over 24 local, area and global non-profits.

The Race begins as the ducks are dropped into a corral on the river. The bugle will call them to the post. Then they’re off, bobbing down the River, carried by the outflowing tide.

First duck home wins his ticket holder a $5,000 Visa Gift Card, second place a $1,000 Card, and the next eight $500 Cards for their ticket holders.

So pitch in, help your neighbors in need, buy a $20 raffle ticket — and maybe become a winner yourself. Every ticket is numbered, and matches a number on a little yellow plastic duck.

Look for Rotarians wearing bright yellow shirts and “Got Ducks” pins. Buy your ticket(s): At the Thursday Farmer’s Market, the Memorial Day Parade, and on weekends they’ll be manning a duck adorned table on Main Street.

Rotary is all about helping others — Service Above Self — through direct hands on engagement and by raising and donating money for those in need.

Sunrise Rotary thanks its Race sponsors — Melissa & Doug; Castlekeep Investment Advisors; Patriot Bank; Eric Zielinski & Co., LLC; The Russell Agency; Berchem, Moses & Devlin, P.C., Attorneys; Gault; Garavel Chrysler Jeep; A.J. Penna & Son; Honda of Westport; and Amelie Babkie Web Design. Thank you, one and all.
