September Business Programs at the Westport Library

The Westport Library has scheduled the following special business programs for September. Both programs will be in the Library’s McManus Room, and are free and open to the public.

Tuesday, September 13, 7 pm: The Politics of Promotion. Bonnie Marcus, author of The Politics of Promotion, will discuss the use of promotion and political savvy to influence career advancement for women. Marcus will address:

  • The importance of being politically savvy for career advancement
  • How to use promotion as a political skill for access to informal networks, information, and opportunities
  • How to build and nurture a power network to support your career ambition

Marcus is an award-winning entrepreneur and Forbes and Business Insider columnist. Her background includes serving as CEO of a ServiceMaster company, VP of Sales at Medical Staffing Network and two other national companies. She has held executive positions in startup companies and Fortune 500 companies. Forbes.com honored her website, Women’s Success Coaching, three years in a row as one of the Top 100 Websites for professional women. She received an undergraduate degree from Connecticut College and a masters from New York University. She is an International Coach Federation (ICF) certified executive coach.

Thursday, September 22, 6-8:30 pm: Market Research on a Shoestring. Experienced marketers Brian Baxendale and Tom Greenbaum will provide practical market research tools for start-ups. Co-sponsored with Fairfield County SCORE. Registration requested at www.scorefairfieldcounty.org

The workshop will cover:

  • How to evaluate your market—size, segmentation and dynamics
  • How to evaluate your competitors and their positioning
  • How to evaluate your product/service positioning
  • How to get feedback on improving your offering
  • A selection of tools and resources

Brian Baxendale worked in marketing and research for over thirty years with Mars, Ford Motor Company and several startups. Tom Greenbaum is an alumnus of Procter & Gamble and Arm & Hammer. He has 35 years of experience in marketing consulting and is the author of six books on marketing.
