One day while Westport artist Leona Frank rode the train home from New York City, she made the serendipitous discovery of a new way to draw: As she began typing a reminder in the Notes program on her iPhone, she noticed a white plus sign on a gray circle that appeared each time she started a new note. Curious about the symbol she had previously ignored on her phone, she clicked on the gray circle, and a horizontal menu appeared on the phone screen. She selected the squiggle icon, and, to her delight, a new menu appeared, displaying tools and colors. She immediately began playing with the program, and her new drawing adventure began!
Now Leona frequently draws on her iPhone, using both her fingers and a stylus. She enjoys the challenge of creating art on the phone's diminutive 2”x2⅝” screen, as well as the limitation of the given tools in Notes. A larger screen and a more sophisticated drawing program may be in her future, but, for now, she is committed to the discipline of making the most of these simple tools in her portable mini-studio. An exhibit of a selection of spirited drawings produced on her iPhone, entitled "iDraw," will be featured in the Westport Library's lower-level Riverwalk Hallway from March 21 through May 28. An opening reception for the artist will be held in the McManus Room on Tuesday, March 28, from 6-7 pm, and is free and open to the public. And on Tuesday, April 25, from 7-8 pm, in the lower-level McManus Room, Leona will hold a workshop on Drawing on an iPhone, which is also free and open to the public.
