Westport Historical Society Presents Art From Beyond Cemetery Tour on Oct. 7

On Sat., Oct. 7, from 3 to 4 pm, join WHS Education and Program Director Nicole Carpenter for an eerie tour of the Greens Farms Church Lower Cemetery, where long-gone stone-masons have left behind clues about early Westporters and their superstitions.

Gravestones reveal a lot about the society whose dead are buried beneath them. Not only did  decorative carvings like the “death’s head,” winged cherub, Grecian urn, and weeping willow hold deep meaning for 18th- and 19th-century Americans they also served to protect and accompany their loved ones into the Great Beyond.

Park at the Greens Farms Church Lower Cemetery, on the corner of Greens Farms Road and the Sherwood Island Connector, and meet at the back entrance of the Lower Cemetery.

Call to register 203-222-1424

$8/WHS member; $10/non-member.
