Seminar on Home Modifications for Aging in Place & Disabiliteis Nov. 5 in Easton

HOME CREW CT TO OFFER SEMINAR ON HOME MODIFICATIONS FOR AGING IN PLACE & DISABILITIES NOV. 5 IN EASTON

Jim Gustin, owner of Home Crew CT in Danbury, a Certified Aging in Place Builder, will provide a seminar on November 5 in Easton, and one November 14th in Brookfield on how homes can be modified for individuals who want to ‘age in place,’ are disabled, or have suffered traumatic injuries. The November 5th seminar will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Easton Senior Center at 650 Morehouse Road.

“Our mission is to provide more than safety and accessibility with home modifications. We strive to provide life enrichment for seniors and persons with disabilities. Our goal is to provide access for people who are wheelchair-dependent to do gardening, cooking and work. We build ramps and lifts to accommodate wheelchairs; we modify rooms into offices or hobby rooms; and we can provide so much more. Our ambition is to educate people on understanding that even though they are wheelchair-bound they can still go outside to their yard, garden in a properly designed flower box, or cook in their own kitchen with confidence. They can live a fulfilling life with just some adaptations to their home.”

A National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Certified Aging in Place Specialist for re-structuring homes for people with physical and cognitive disabilities, Home Crew CT adapts homes to provide safe and easy access for such daily living activities as bathing, dressing, preparing meals, eating and sleeping. “These are basic activities of independence,” stated Gustin. “Our role is to make people safe and comfortable doing these activities so that anyone at any age can live at home. We want disabled or aging individuals to do what they enjoy while living a full life.”

Attuned fully to special building codes, home modification techniques and building materials, Home Crew CT installs wheelchair access ramps, creates barrier-free entrances, installs lifts and elevators, widens doorways and halls, reconfigures electrical outlets and switches for easy access, and installs ergonomic door handles. “The products, technology, and design options cover every aspect of home living - easy access closets and pantries, chair height toilets, wall cabinet lifts that literally bring the cabinets down to the person sitting in a wheelchair, multi-height counters, and much more,” explained Gustin.

With ‘life enrichment’ as their focus, Home Crew CT provides shelving and work surfaces that enable wheelchair accessibility to home hobby or office space, natural and artificial task lighting for hobby and reading areas, and exterior paths for enjoying the outside. “For safety in every room,” stated Gustin, “we install grab bars and railings, barrier-free showers, enhanced lighting as seniors need more light, non-slip or slip-resistant floors, temperature-limited water for bathing and dish washing, even contrasting colors on walls and showers to assist those with cognitive deficits.

Our ambition is to provide full accessibility to every aspect of daily living, and with confidence. Studies show that the overwhelming majority of Americans want to live in their homes rather than nursing care or assisted living facilities. People who are aging very much want to spend the final years of their lives enjoying fully what they’ve known and loved to the best of their abilities. Our role is to help them feel safe and secure in their homes as long as they are able.”

Gustin pointed out that AARP studies reveal that, “84% of Americans want to stay in their homes. Studies and surveys also show that the number one ambition of most disabled or injured people is to be at home with their families. To live their lives fully and hopefully with the abilities to interact with generations of people in their families and with friends they know and love. By adapting a home for wheelchair accessibility or other physical needs, more visits can be enjoyed in a home and more inter-generational activities and memories can be created.”

On November 14, he will present at the Brookfield Senior Center at 100 Pocono Road at 1:00 p.m.
