MUSEUM MADNESS: New Canaan Library hosts New London Maritime Society, presenting on its collection and programs

New Canaan Library presents the New London Maritime Society (NLMS) as part of its Museum Madness program series on May 9 at 1pm in the Adrian Lamb Room. Over the past five years the New London Maritime Society adopted three lighthouses. During this program, guests will learn how owning these historic beacons has transformed the Society and its programs--from Lighthouse Kids programs in the schools and boat tours to all-out restorations efforts.

This is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of NLMS's fascinating collection and history. Through the library's museum pass program, institutions like NLMS are available for our patrons to tour free of charge, or at a discounted admission rate.

Susan Tamulevich, Executive Director of NLMS over the past seven years, oversaw the adoption of New London Harbor Light, the oldest and tallest lighthouse on Long Island Sound; in 2010, applied for and was awarded Race Rock Light Station (off Fishers island, NY) in 2013; and applied for and will be awarded New London Ledge Lighthouse (in association with the Ledge Light Foundation) in June 2015 -- an unprecedented accomplishment for a single organization, according to the National Park Service. Over 18 weeks this summer, NLMS will run its fifth annual Sentinels on the Sound celebration of the lighthouses off New London. The celebration features lighthouse boat tours, lectures, special events and exhibitions centered on area lighthouses and maritime history and preservation, drawing an audience from across the country.
