A Family Grows Up With Autism

Writer, Mother and Autism Advocate to Speak at Norwalk Public Library

Norwalk, CT, February 9, 2016 – The Norwalk Public Library’s AuthorSpeak series will present a talk by Liane Kupferberg Carter, author of Ketchup Is My Favorite Vegetable: A Family Grows Up with Autism, on Wednesday, March 23rd at 12:00 noon in the Main Auditorium. A light lunch will be provided courtesy of the library.

Liane Kupferberg Carter’s lovingly written memoir, speaks to parents about how to create an ordinary family life, while dealing with the extraordinary needs of an autistic child. She details, with a mother’s special insight, the twenty year journey from her son’s double diagnosis of autism/epilepsy through the struggles and triumphs on the road to adulthood, showing how one family learned to grow and thrive with autism.

According to the organization Autism Speaks, the latest research shows that autism spectrum now affects 1 in 68 children, and 1 in 42 boys, making boys nearly 5 times more likely than girls to have autism. Now one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the U.S., with no medical detection or cure, autism costs a family an additional $60,000 per year on average.

Liane Kupferberg Carter is a nationally known writer and advocate for the autism community. Her articles and essays have appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, Huffington Post, Parents, Autism After 16, Autism Spectrum News, and Thinking Person’s Guide to Autism. Her work is frequently featured in numerous special education and health blogs. She has a Master’s in Journalism from New York University and a B.A. in English from Brandeis University. She lives with her family in New York.
