Ten SHU Students Awarded Paul L. Jones Scholarship in Health Care

FAIRFIELD, CT — Ten Sacred Heart University students in the family nurse practitioner (FNP) program have earned the Paul L. Jones Scholarship, based on merit and need.

The students received $2,250 each to support their study for careers as primary care providers with a clinical doctorate in nursing. The BSN to DNP program with an FNP specialty is three years full time or four years part time

“The scholarship will help prepare an educated nurse workforce that will influence better patient outcomes at multiple levels of health care,” said Julie Stewart, director of the FNP program. “This year the winning students are in the family nurse practitioner program, which will culminate in a clinical doctorate (Doctor of Nursing Practice).”

Family nurse practitioners provide a wide range of health care services to individuals and families in various clinical settings, Stewart said. “They focus on health promotion and disease prevention across the lifespan. They are educated to diagnose and develop treatment plans for acute and chronic diseases. With an advanced doctoral degree, graduates are well prepared to lead efforts to improve patient outcomes and population health at all levels of health care,” she said.

The scholarship helps students financially with tuition and “earns them distinction of qualifying for the prestigious scholarship,” said Stewart.
