Mario Cuomo Has Died

Mario Cuomo a former three-term governor of New York and father of current governor Andrew Cuomo, died Thursday at the age of 82.

Cuomo, a liberal Democrat, never sought out the presidential nomination in spite of twice being considered among his party's front runners.

He was scheduled to take part in his son's second inauguration Thursday but was unable to attend the One World Trade Center ceremony due to health concerns.

During Cuomo's tenure as governor from 1983 to 1994, he dealt with two recessions and presided over a massive expansion of the state's prison system. In the national arena, Cuomo delivered the keynote speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention, a harsh critique of President Ronald Reagan's economic policies.
