WILTON, CONN., June 18, 2012—On Sunday, May 27th, residents of Wilton and neighboring towns kicked off Memorial Day weekend by participating in the Wilton Education Foundation’s 4th annual “Get Smart for Wilton 5K.” The 3.1-‐mile event attracted the largest turnout in event history, with nearly 300 racers running to support Wilton’s children and educators. Race proceeds help fund Wilton schools’ technology, music and the arts, and staff development.
The race began at 9:00 a.m., on a perfect running day, starting and ending at the Wilton High School track, and featuring Cider Mill and Wilton High School prominently along the course. The community-‐ wide event drew marathoners, casual joggers, families, strollers, students and educators, while friends, neighbors and classmates cheered the runners on from the sidelines, waving signs and pushing decorated strollers.
Nick Fraticelli and Mary Zengo were the winners of the 2012 “Get Smart for Wilton 5K.” Nick Fraticelli was the overall winner, crossing the finish line in 18 minutes and 05 seconds, while Mary Zengo was the first female to cross, with a time of 18:22. The top five male finishers for the 5K race were: Fraticelli, first, 18:05; Robert Fauber, second, 18:19; David Silvia, fourth, 18:31; Vincent Desana, fifth, 19:13; and Jeff Todd, sixth, 19:20. The top five female finishers were: Mary Zengo, third, 18:22; Ellie Downs, seventh, 19:29; Heather Fraticelli, eighth, 19:42; Noemi Behar, 15th, 20:54; and Rocio Fields, 24th, 19:20. "This race receives such great support and energy from the community that we’d love to take it to the next level in 2013,” said Kacky Theoharides, one of the SOL Sisters, who chaired the fundraiser. “The event committee is already thinking up additional entertaining elements like group competitions, costumes, a decorative stroller contest, an off-‐road component, and possibly even tie it to the Town’s Memorial Day Parade.”
