Wilton Law Enforcement Joins Special Olympic Athletes In Torch Run on June 9

On June 9, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. the Wilton Police Department will be participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for CT Special Olympics. Members of the department and Special Olympians will run through both Wilton and Ridgefield carrying the “Flame of Hope.”

The ceremonies will begin in Ridgefield on Prospect Street (Behind Dimitri’s) where Wilton officers will join Ridgefield police, running with the flame through the center of town. Both Wilton and Ridgefield officers will then head to Wilton with the torch where they will run through Wilton town center.

What is the Law Enforcement Torch Run

The Law Enforcement Torch Run® is Special Olympics' single largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle. Since its inception, the International Torch Run Program has raised more than US $414 million for Special Olympics world-wide. More than 142,000 volunteers from 113 LETR programs across 46 countries every year carry the "Flame of Hope", raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics.

At its most basic level, the Torch Run is an actual running event where officers and athletes carry the Special Olympics "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of local tournaments, or State, Provincial or National Summer or Winter Games. At its more extensive, the Torch Run program encompasses a variety of fundraising vehicles, in addition to the actual Torch Run, such as T-shirt or merchandise sales, donations or pledges for runners in the Torch Run, corporate donations, and special events such as Penguin Plunges, golf tournaments or other events that have local appeal.
