The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum Invites Community Collaboration on New Exhibitions

Do you have a collection of tchotchkes, records, photographs—or something more unusual? This is your chance to become a part of The Aldrich’s upcoming Circumstance series of exhibitions!

The Museum is inviting residents of Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven Counties in Connecticut, or Westchester and Putnam Counties in New York, to suggest items from visual culture to be displayed in relationship to work by one of the six artists whose exhibitions will be on view from May 3 to October 25, 2015.

The artists—Virginia Poundstone, Nancy Shaver, Ruby Sky Stiler, Penelope Umbrico, Elif Uras, and B. Wurtz—will transform the Museum’s galleries, displaying their own work alongside objects, materials, artifacts, and artworks they have selected from craft, found, utilitarian, historical, design, and everyday objects, creating installations that reveal how the convergence of fine art, design, and non-art objects within the exhibition format informs creative expression.

Interested in participating? Here is how it works:

Images of the artists’ work to which the public is being asked to respond are posted on the Museum’s website at aldrichart.org/opportunities/publicproject.php.

The objective is to choose items that will create a thought-provoking context for the work of one of the artists. Items suggested in proposals can include, but are not limited to, objects, artworks, craft, collections, environments (a group of objects), books, films or other media (suitable to be exhibited on a monitor), utilitarian objects, clothing, photographs, and furniture.

There are a few important considerations to keep in mind:Item(s) suggested must be either owned by the individual submitting the proposal or easily procured by that individual; anything that can be easily transported and is suitable for display is appropriate for submission. Artists may not submit their own work.

The six complementary exhibitions will be mounted in The Aldrich’s Small Space Gallery (approximately 155 sq. ft.), adjacent to the Museum’s atrium. A floor plan of the Gallery is also posted on the Museum’s website, to give prospective participants a sense of the scale of the room.

Online proposals are due by 5 pm on March 6, 2015. To review the complete set of guidelines and learn more about the proposal selection process, please visit aldrichart.org/opportunities/publicproject.php.
