Exploring the American Eugenics Movement: Prelude and Epilogue to the Buck v. Bell Trial of 1927

New Canaan Library is honored to present Dave Micklos, Executive Director, DNA Learning Center in Cold Spring Harbor, who will deliver a lecture on the history of the eugenics movement in America, specifically the events leading up to the infamous Buck v. Bell Trial of 1927. The topic of eugenics figures prominently in Bill Bryson's epic One Summer: America, 1927, and is an unsettling chapter of American history that many are unaware of. Mr. Micklos will speak at the Library on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 7 PM in the Adrian Lamb Room.

Dave Micklos invites all to take a tour of the rise and fall of the ill-fated movement to genetically engineer American society, which reached its peak with the sterilization of Carrie Buck in 1927. Learn the back story of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1927 decision to uphold eugenic sterilization, how the practice fueled the Nazi Holocaust, and how recent scholarship uncovered the tragic lie behind the trial.
