Watershed Gallery Cuts Both Ways

Watershed Gallery presents their new exhibit, “Cuts Both Ways,” featuring the papercut works of Béatrice Coron and Gregg Welz.  An opening reception will be held at 6:30pm on Saturday, April 25th.

“Intricately cut by hand, the works in this exhibition are poetic interplays of light and shadow, negative and positive, fluidity and geometry,” says Jennifer Mathy, director of Watershed Gallery. “Coron’s delicate black-and-white paper tapestries float on the wall, while Welz’s colorful, layered constructs project themselves toward the viewer.”

Renowned French paper cut artist Béatrice Coron has developed a language of storytelling by cutting multi-layered stories in the construction medium, Tyvek. A veteran presenter at TED, Coron’s work can be seen in collections around the world including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Coron’s relationship with the Town of Ridgefield began two years ago, when the gallery commissioned a 16-square foot paper cut inspired by the imagery, folklore and history of Ridgefield.

Artist Gregg Welz explores the grid by intricately folding pieces of paper into repetitive patterns of color and cast shadow. As a conceptual artist, his imagination is influenced by the geometry of the environment, both natural and man-made. A lifelong resident of Norwalk, Welz received an education in art and design at Pratt Institute, and has worked in many creative fields, including illustration, advertising, art restoration, and frame design.

The April 25th opening reception will feature music from Chris Anderson and Gerry O’Hara of the band, The Angry O’Haras, as well as light refreshments. The party begins at 6:30pm at 23 Governor Street in Ridgefield.

“Cuts Both Ways” will be on exhibit at Watershed Gallery until Friday, July 3rd.  For more information, please visit watershedgallery.com or contact the gallery at 203.438.4387.
