Jazz pianist performs in Wilton Library’s Hot & Cool concert March 19

 

Fresh from an East Asian tour, the Helen Sung Trio heats up the stage for Wilton Library’s Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room concert on Sunday, March 19, beginning at 4 p.m.  Having been trained as a classical pianist, Ms. Sung went on to graduate from the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and win the Kennedy Center's Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition.  She has been captivating listeners worldwide with a riveting artistry that seamlessly integrates the jazz and classical worlds. Ms. Sung has worked with a “Who’s Who” in Jazz, including the late Clark Terry, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, and MacArthur Fellow Regina Carter.

Her 2014 album Anthem for a New Day featured Grammy-winning NEA Jazz Master Paquito D'Rivera and MacArthur Fellow Regina Carter. In its review of that album, The New York Times said that “the quality of her touch, like her grasp of harmony and form, has never been in doubt. What’s striking this time around is an openness of vision, paired with a looseness of execution. Ms. Sung sounds both relaxed and searching, and she imparts the same qualities to her crew.”  She was named by Wynton Marsalis as one of his “Jazz Musicians to Watch!”

Ms. Sung is an active composer and has received several commissions and grants, including a 2014 Chamber Music America/Doris Duke Foundation New Jazz Works Grant. Inspired by her experience at the Monk Institute, Sung stays involved in music education through residencies/workshops, and joined the jazz faculties at the Juilliard School and Columbia University in 2015.

The Hot & Cool concerts are made possible by the William and Karen Tell Foundaiton with a special thanks to Ed and Catherine Romer, and Chris and Tish Brubeck.  An informal reception immediately follows the concert.  The suggested donation is $10 per person.  Advance registration is strongly recommended for this very popular concert series.  Pre-registered guests are encouraged to arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating.  Waitlisted and walk-in registrants will be admitted after 3:50 if space is available.
