Wilton Library welcomes bestselling author Jane Hamilton April 4

Award-winning author Jane Hamilton visits Wilton Library for a talk about her acclaimed novel, The Excellent Lombards, on Tuesday, April 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Ms. Hamilton’s talk is her only Connecticut appearance for the debut of her trade paperback edition. Ann Patchet, a favorite Wilton Reads author of Wilton Library readers, said of the novel, “This is the book Jane Hamilton was born to write, and it is a book that thrilled me to read. The Excellent Lombards is, in fact, magnificent.”

Ms. Hamilton brings readers back to the orchards and farms of the Midwest with the story of Mary Francis “Frankie” Lombard. Frankie is deeply in love with her family’s sprawling apple orchard and the tangled web of family members who inhabit it.  Content to spend her days planning capers with her brother William, one-upping her brainy cousin Amanda, and expertly tending the orchard with her father, Frankie desires nothing more than for the rhythm of life to continue undisturbed. But change is inevitable, and threats of urbanization, disinheritance, and college applications shake the foundation of Frankie’s roots.  As Frankie is forced to shed her childhood fantasies and face the possibility of losing the idyllic future she had envisioned for her family, she must decide whether loving something means clinging tightly or letting go.

Jane Hamilton is the author of The Book of Ruth, winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award for first fiction, and A Map of the World, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and named one of the top ten books of the year by Entertainment Weekly, Publishers Weekly, the Miami Herald, and People. The Book of Ruth and A Map of the World, were selections of Oprah’s Book Club and were made into films.  Her nonfiction has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Allure, O: The Oprah Magazine, Elle, and various anthologies.  She is married to an apple farmer and lives in Wisconsin.

A Question &Answer period will follow the talk.  There is no charge for the program but registration is highly recommended. Books will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of Elm Street Books of New Canaan.  Wilton Library is located at 137 Old Ridgefield Road in the heart of Wilton Center.
