Autumn Poetry with Judson Scruton Begins Oct. 12 at Wilton Library

Judson Scruton returns to the Wilton Library to lead a four-part Autumn Poetry Seminar Series exploring the poetry of islands. The series begins on Thursday Oct. 12 from 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. and continues at the same day and time on Oct. 19 and 26 and Nov. 9.

In keeping with the Library’s focus on Cuba this fall, the poetry seminar will focus on Islands, both literal and metaphoric. From John Donne’s 'No Man Is An Island' to Cuban-exile poet Richard Blanco’s 'The Island Within,' participants will explore the poetic contours, inlets and outlets, of these bio-diverse hotspots. Two major island poems of Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell will be closely examined: 'Crusoe in England' and 'The Quaker Graveyard in Nantucket.' Poems by Seamus Heaney, and Derek Walcott will also be discussed.

Judson Scruton, M.A (The Johns Hopkins University, The Writing Seminars, specializing in poetry), has taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. In his career as an educator, Scruton has also directed publications, communications, public relations, and development at a variety of educational institutions in the U.S. and UK, including the Newberry Library in Chicago. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of English at Fairfield University.
