Suburban Dystopia: Fifty Years of Fairfield County in Film at WHS

Join us at Westport Historical Society for a Sunday Film festival of Four iconic films on Nov. 12, Jan. 28, Feb. 11 and March 11. The films, illustrating suburban dystopia include: The Swimmer,  Stepford Wives, Ice Storm & Revolutionary Road. Each film will be presented from 4 to 6 pm.

The three hosts and presenters for The Swimmer on Nov. 12 are:

Richard Deej Webb, curator and producer is an author, educator, historian and documentary filmmaker. A featured presenter in the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Prohibition documentary Connecticut Goes Dry, he is also creator and producer along with Robert Williams of Boats Against The Current, the  F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald documentary, and is author of The Honeymoon of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, both coming out in 2018. He has been a resident of Fairfield and Westport since 1967.

Will Fulton Will has lived most of his life in Fairfield County, exploring the terrain and the nuances of the many varied communities in this suburban paradise.  Hooked on movies at an early age – particularly those concerning suburbia – he fondly remembers watching these films on one of the 7 channels available in the pre-cable days of the ’70s and ’80s. He is excited to share and discuss this unique slice of life with Fairfield County “colleagues” who may not have experienced it firsthand!

Robert Steven Williams His debut novel, My Year as a Clown received the silver medal for popular fiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards in 2013 and reached number one on three Amazon charts. A runner-up in the 2014 Great American Fiction contest sponsored by the Saturday Evening Post and a finalist in the Raymond Carver Short Story Contest, his short fiction has appeared in Carve Magazine, The Orange Coast Review, and Weston Magazine. Robert’s company, Against the Grain Productions produces videos primarily for not-for-profits including the Paul Newman charity Safe Water Network and Land is Life. Robert is currently making a film with Deej Webb about F. Scott Fitzgerald featuring Sam Waterston.

Joining us for the last three films will be Dan Woog. Dan is a writer and blogger, with a special focus on the wonders of Fairfield County. His parents moved to Westport in 1956. They lived on the same street as his father’s college friend: Rod Serling. Dan is also the boys varsity soccer coach at Staples High School.
