On the Children's Shelf: What Do You Do With a Problem? by Kobi Yamada

A year ago, I was introduced to Kobi Yamada's "What Do You Do With an Idea?" I loved that book. It was brilliant and I think something readers of all ages should read. I was thrilled yesterday when a librarian friend handed me Kobi Yamada's new book, "What Do You Do With a Problem?"

Readers join the main character as he realizes he has a problem through his many attempts at getting away from it...ignoring it, trying to forget about it, trying to hide from it. Except the more he tries to avoid the problem, the bigger it becomes.

He has to stop running from the problem and face it. In doing so, he learns that it wasn't as bad as he expected. He able to face it and tackle it and learn from it.

My favorite line from the book is, "Every problem has an opportunity for something good. You just have to look for it." This book will become a staple in my house. As my children grow, and may seem too old for picture books, this book is one I will encourage them to revisit. The story is presented in a way that the youngest readers can understand it, but the message is so powerful that all readers will learn from it.
