State of CT: Winter Weather Advisory

Winter weather advisories are in effect for the entire state at this time.

At 9:00 AM radar showed moderate to heavy snow falling across the state with temperatures ranging from near 20 F in Northern CT to the upper 20's at the coast.  Some sleet and freezing rain is starting to mix into the snow along the coast.

Snowfall totals thus far range from 3" - 5" across the state.  The snow is expected to changeover to sleet and rain along the coast by 10:00 AM.

The rain/snow line is then forecast to move inland and reach the Hartford area by Noon.

After the changeover, the precipitation is expected to lighten up as a dry slot moves in from the west early this afternoon.  Temperatures are forecast to rise above freezing along the coast by Noon and in the Hartford area by 3:00 PM.

Some freezing light rain may hold on in the colder valleys of northern CT until 6:00 PM.  Any icing is expected to be minor.

The impact on travel for the next few hours is expected to be moderate to major in a few locations with moderate to heavy falling snow.

Once the changeover occurs, the roads should slowly improve with the impact along the coast dropping down to minor by late afternoon but remaining moderate in northern CT for most of the afternoon with slick driving expected.

Total accumulations are forecast to range from 3" - 5" along the coast up to 6" - 8" inland.

Light rain is expected tonight with temperatures rising into the 40's by daybreak on Sunday.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to monitor this storm.
