CT Gas Prices Skyrocket as New Year Starts

To kick off the New Year, Connecticut gas prices, like fireworks, have exploded in recent weeks compared to this time last year.

AAA Northeast’s January 3 weekly survey of prices in Connecticut finds self-serve, regular averaging $2.47 a gallon, 32 cents higher than this time last year. Nationally, gas prices are averaging $2.35, 36 cents higher than this time last year.

Retail oil prices are on the uptick because markets are reacting by the recent agreement between OPEC and non-OPEC countries to cut crude oil production by 1.8 million barrels daily in an attempt to rebalance the global market supply. In 2017, retail prices are expected to climb and will most probably increase right up to the summer driving seasons when seasonal refinery maintenances gets underway in the spring.

AAA’s weekly survey of prices in the Nutmeg State’s four regional areas as follows:

Greater Bridgeport/Stamford    $2.53                    New Haven/Meriden                     $2.45

Greater Hartford                              $2.45                     New London/Norwich   $2.44

Statewide Average:  $2.47

Today, South Carolina and Arizona register the lowest average prices at $2.11 and 2.13, respectively. Hawaii continues to lead the pack with highest prices in the nation at $3.02, followed by California at $2.76. Connecticut continues to be the state with the 11th highest prices in the nation, a spot we’ve held for several weeks.
