On the Children's Shelf: Why Author Events for Kids Matter

I met Clare Pernice this week, author and illustrator of the beautiful children's book "Circus Girl." I immediately had to call home and tell my daughter. I expected her to be over the moon, but the phone line was silent. I was surprised, until one of my older children said she was so excited she stood there, eyes wide, mouth open. She was speechless. I became the coolest mom ever in her eyes because I met an author whose book she loves.

A few months ago, we were wandering the bookstore and stumbled upon "Circus Girl" on the shelf. We were both immediately drawn to the beautiful cover and quickly dove into the book. This sweet story of a little girl who imagines herself in the circus is matched with some of the most beautiful illustrations. I was captivated by the beauty of the book, while my daughter was captivated by this story with which she could so easily identify.

After my phone call, as I drove home, I realized I need to bring my children to more local author events. So many wonderful authors make appearances at bookstores and libraries. Seeing my daughter's reaction to my meeting Clare Pernice, I realized I need to do a better job watching for local children's author events. The chance to meet an author a child loves is such a wonderful experience. What better way to foster their love of books than to give them the chance to meet those who write and illustrate the stories they love? Plus, the chance of possibly getting a signed copy of a beloved book...that's awesome at any age.

So this summer, we will definitely be watching local bookstores and libraries, and hopefully, my children will get to meet the mastermind behind a story they love. They will get to tell that person thank you for a great book, maybe even get a picture to remember that amazing experience, and maybe it will make their love of books even greater. So someday when they think about why they love to read, they will remember that time they met their favorite author or illustrator.

If you are looking for a beautiful picture book, be sure sure to check out Clare Pernice's "Circus Girl." I know I've mentioned in this column before that I've wanted to climb inside certain books and live there. I would definitely add Clare Pernice's illustrations to that list. This book will definitely be one that I will be giving to several little ones.
