Wilton 5 Blue vs New Canaan Red

The 5th grade Wilton Blue squad hosted New Canaan Red in a divisional playoff game Sunday. The visitors got off to a hot start, forcing a quick Wilton punt and then driving down the field for a TD to take an 8-0 lead. Wilton Blue battled back, storming 70 yards in 8 plays, as blockers opened holes for several different running backs. Max Rothkopf, Jack Carroll, and William Dahl had particularly good blocks on the drive, and Kiel Polito's block paved the way for Wooder Thoby to score on a 33-yard reverse for a TD to cut the lead to 8-6. Wilton's defense took control after that, forcing a three-and-out, as the stout line, including Luke O'Neill, Christian Theoharides, Owen Pettit, Henry Sell, and E.J. Fasano pressured New Canaan. The Wilton offense kept up the home team's momentum, with blocking by Brendan Quinn, Will Jarvie, William Shain, Antonio Goosman, and the rest of the line opening big holes again. A 25-yard pass reception by Kyle Burns got Wilton to the doorstep, and Ryan Sorbo cashed in from 6 yards out to put Wilton in the lead 14-8 at halftime.

On Wilton's first possession of the second half, Thoby broke a 47-yard TD run around end, aided by big blocks from Matt Murphy and Trey Dexter. Dahl snared a bootleg pass to give Wilton a 21-8 lead. With New Canaan playing from behind, the visitors took to the air, but Wilton's secondary was up to the challenge. Sorbo collected an interception, and he and Max Mannino, Nick Mancuso, and John Stanley consistently blanketed the receivers and batted down passes, and the defensive line, including Dante Filipponi and Matthew Farago, harassed the quarterback. While the defense kept New Canaan at bay, the offense ground out first downs and wound down the clock, powered in part by the blocks of Fasano, Murphy, and Michael Burton. The 21-8 victory sends Wilton Blue to the Divisional final next weekend against New Canaan White.
