Wilton Rowers Off to a Strong Start

Wilton rowers helped Norwalk River Rowing open its spring regatta season on Saturday April 5 with three gold medals at the Greenwich Invitational. The regatta, held in Greenwich at Grass Island in a strong wind, featured 13 crews from Connecticut and New York, most of which had been practicing on the water for only a few weeks after a winter that seemed never to end.

The girls' second novice eight captured NRRA's first gold of the day. Six of the nine athletes in that boat hailed from Wilton: Kailyn Kieffer, Maddie Srivastrava, Sabrina Pastorello, Anna Holt, Amanda Greenberg and Caroline Troy. The boat featured five athletes who had never raced in a regatta before, who won first place in their first races.

NRRA's next gold came from the boys' junior varsity eight. This boat included three Wiltonians: Jack McDermott, Dane Crameri and Luke Goodwin.

The day culminated with a gold medal for NRRA's boys in the premier event, the first varsity eight. Five of the nine athletes powering this boat to its first place finish were from Wilton. Jamie Fagan was in the coxswain's seat calling the cadence for fellow Wilton residents James Koenigsberg, Joe Blake, Greg Bauerfeld and George Mgaloblishvili. On hand to award the medals was Connecticut State Senator Scott Frantz.
