Wilton resident heads to Kentucky as a finalist in National History Bee competition

Shaun Morelock of Katonah and three of his classmates from The Harvey School’s middle school including Wilton resident, Alexander Breitenbach, will be heading to Louisville, Kentucky, next month as finalists in the National History Bee competition.

Joining Morelock on the trip to Louisville will be fellow eighth-graders Alexander Breitenbach, Sanath Kumar and Andrew Lebowitz. They won the right to participate in the national competition when they earned qualifying scores in a regional contest April 14 at Middlesex Middle School in Darien, Connecticut. They competed against more than 60 students from middle schools in New York, Connecticut and Long Island.  A fifth Harvey student, Alexander Ogg, fell just a few points shy of making it as a national finalist.

Harvey Middle School teachers Stephanie Metz and Doug Plaskett have prepared their students for the competition program instituted for the first time this year. While all of the eighth-graders took the Intramural Bee Exam, the road to Louisville began for the finalists when they excelled on the online regional exam, which qualified them to compete in the regional finals.

Metz said the achievement of the students has caused quite a stir on campus. “We’re all extremely proud of each student. They should be commended for having great attitudes and perseverance throughout each phase of the grueling competition.”

The National History Bee competition will take place over Memorial Day weekend.
