Explore Shakespeare's King Lear with Professor Schenker at New Canaan Library

New Canaan Library is pleased to offer a unique exploration of Shakespeare's famous King Lear by Yale professor and dean Mark J. Schenker.  Professor Schenker will speak at the Library on Tuesday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Adrian Lamb Room. Please register for this program online at newcanaanlibrary.org.

King Lear is one of the four plays Shakespeare wrote between 1600 and 1606 that are considered the height of his achievement in tragedy: Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth. Join Mark Schenker of Yale College for a consideration of King Lear, both on its own terms and in the context of Shakespeare’s tragedies. Among the topics Schenker will cover in his lecture include the tragic view of life, the nature of the tragic hero, the moral imagination, and the ways in which Shakespeare employs theater as symbol and metaphor. Participants are encouraged to bring to the session any edition of the play so that they can follow along when extended references are made to particular scenes.

Mark J. Schenker has been at Yale College since 1990.  He is currently a senior associate dean of the College and dean of academic affairs.  A former lecturer in the English Department, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University with a concentration in 19th-century and early 20th-century English literature. He has for nearly 30 years lectured on literature and film and has led book discussion series in more than 100 venues in Connecticut.
