RVNA Health Source: Caregiver Support Group Being Formed

Are you a caregiver? Do you feel overwhelmed at times and need someone to talk to? Would you like to connect with others but find that difficult? Caregiving can be tremendously stressful but it is also an act of kindness and love. RVNA is starting a Circle of Caring-Caregiver Group which will meet the first Thursday of each month, beginning September 1, from 1:30 – 2:30pm in the Caregiver Support Room at RVNA, 27 Governor Street, Ridgefield.

As people live longer with more chronic disease, many will find themselves, caregivers. When you begin the caregiver role, it’s important to know as much as you can about the medical condition of the person you are caring for. Encourage their independence to the extent possible. Reach out to others for advice and support, but also learn to trust your gut instincts in making decisions about the needs of your loved one. Know your limits and ask for additional help when it’s necessary. Caregivers deal with a wide range of emotions including anxiety, resentment, guilt and grief. These feelings are normal, and it is helpful to talk with others in order to better understand and accept the feelings. It is essential to take care of yourself and to make use of community and other services that are available. Networking with others is important in making the caregiver role less stressful. RVNA’s Circle of Caring-Caregiver Group is free and open to the public, and you are welcome to join in at any time. Barbara Newland, RVNA Director of Community Health and Wellness will be the facilitator. For questions or to RSVP, call 203 438-5555.

Founded in 1914, RVNA is an accredited non-profit Medicare-certified home healthcare agency that also supports public health and safety and promotes the highest quality of life.
