Weir Art Academy Opens at Weir Farm National Historic Site

Weir Farm National Historic Site has announced the opening of the Weir Art Academy in partnership with Dmitri Wright, the park's Master Artist/Instructor. Due to popular demand, Mr. Wright is now offering academy level training in 4-day weekday workshops in the American Impressionist plein air tradition in the summer and fall of 2014.

Weir Art Academy students will learn to apply the methods used by the Impressionists to their work in capturing nature, in nature. Through Dmitri's multi-dimensional teaching methods and unique 'Preservation and Progress Model', each student will develop their own personal brand or style of Impressionism. By applying the techniques and philosophy of the Impressionists, both science and poetry, students will experience the Impressionist tradition while painting en plein air in a landscape that has inspired artists for over 130 years.

There is a fee to participate. Students are welcomed to register for one or both workshops each session. Weir Art Academy workshops are open to all levels from beginners to advanced. Limited spaces available to maximize learning and mitigate environmental impacts. All Weir Art Academy workshops will take place in the historic Burlingham Barn and surrounding landscape at Weir Farm National Historic Site (http://www.nps.gov/wefa/historyculture/places-burlinghambarn.htm).

ABOUT DMITRI WRIGHT: Dmitri Wright seeks to continue the Impressionist discipline through his 'Preservation and Progress Model' by teaching at the Bush-Holley Historic Site, which housed the Cos Cob Art Colony; and as an instructor of Impressionist drawing and painting at the Silvermine Arts Center and Weir Farm National Historic Site. He also instructs Master Art Workshops throughout the USA and Europe.

ABOUT WEIR FARM NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE: Weir Farm National Historic Site was home to three generations of American artists. Julian Alden Weir, a leading figure in American art and the development of American Impressionism, acquired the farm in 1882. After Weir, the artistic legacy was continued by his daughter, painter Dorothy Weir Young and her husband, sculptor Mahonri Young, followed by New England painters Sperry and Doris Andrews. Today, the 60-acre park, which includes the Weir House, Weir and Young Studios, barns, gardens, and Weir Pond, is one of the nation's finest remaining landscapes of American art.
