Society of Connecticut Sculptors exhibits at Wilton Library in June

For the first time ever, the Society of Connecticut Sculptors will present a juried exhibition at Wilton Library, opening Friday, June 5, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.  The reception is free and open to the public.  More than 25 works will be on display by sixteen members of the Society.  As a juried exhibition, prizes will be awarded at the opening reception. This also is the first time the library has curated an all-sculpture exhibition.   According to Ed MacEwen, the library’s art chairman, “The opportunity arose and we were pleased to be able to bring this type of art to the library and the community.  We’ve had sculpture pieces in exhibitions previously, but this is the first time we showcase this media in an entire show.”

The exhibition is being judged by Michael Keropian, of Keropian Sculpture in Carmel, NY. He has created and provided sculpture for more than 30 years. In 2000, he received a commission to create nine heroic-size tigers for the new baseball stadium of the Detroit Tigers, Comerica Park. He has won numerous awards throughout the years and recently won the coveted Hudson Valley Art Association's Gold Medal.

The Society of Connecticut Sculptors was established in 1992 in the Hartford area by a small group of sculptors who wished to encourage the appreciation of sculpture in the state of Connecticut. The non-profit Society achieves this goal by a combination of exhibitions, workshops, social events, field trips and lectures, as well as other educational projects. The works for Wilton Library’s exhibition represent a variety of styles and media including bronze, terra cotta, mahogany, alabaster and more.

The featured artists for Wilton Library’s exhibition are from around the region as follows: Frankie Davies and Dr. Fay Stevenson-Smith from Wilton; Joyce Fama and Sally Monahan, Norwalk; Dr. Charlotte Brown, New Canaan; Connie Taylor, Weston; Rene Beland and Charlotte Birnbaum, Stamford;  Danielle Langford, Danbury; Wendy Swain, Stratford; Susan  Frost, North Haven; Dr. Gerry Freedman, Branford; Lea Ann Cogswell, South Windsor; Susan Zurles, Burlington; Michael Keropian, Carmel, NY and Sergey Eylanbekov, Syosset, NY.

A majority of the works will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibition runs through Friday, June 26.  Library hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays, 10 to 6; Saturdays, 10 to 5 and Sundays, 1 to 5. Beginning June 22, the library will be closed on Sundays for the summer.

Wilton Library is located at 137 Old Ridgefield Road in the heart of Wilton Center.  For information and directions, visit www.wiltonlibrary.org or call 203-762-3950, ext. 213.
