Innovation Day at Wilton Library
Wilton Library is celebrating people who can “tinker, create, craft and do” in its second annual Innovation Day set for Saturday, October 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day’s theme is “Discover, Dabble, Do-It-Yourself” and the library is going all out to embrace the concept of making things in whatever way one can. There will be demonstrations, presentations, hands-on workshops, tables for crafting, coloring, card-making, etching and more.
Susan Lauricella, Wilton Library’s Maker Space Manager is excited about the event, “We have so much planned for people of all ages. We want people to explore, try, learn and have fun – think of the library as an incubator for ideas; a place for learning new skills and discovering your hidden talents.”
Some of the ways that participants will be able to test drive are soldering blinkie pins, learning how to knit, learning how to make wine, and experiencing a wine tasting, learning how to do basic home plumbing repairs, raising chickens or tying fishing flies. There will be a table for tinkerers who like to take apart things such as phones and monitors; test out a 3D Doodler, slap on a pair of virtual reality glasses, and kids can put some snap circuits together or try their hands at Makey Makey (turning everyday objects into touchpads and combining them with the internet). For those who are truly crafty, there will be terrarium making, etching of glass votive holders, and lighting up aprons with LEDs by sewing with conductive thread, and more.
Melissa Baker, just one of the library’s many creative staff members who also works in the Innovation Station maker space added, “If art is someone’s passion, they can interact with a portrait
Innovation Day is free thanks to the sponsorships from Bruce Bennett Nissan, Catamount Wealth Management and Ring’s End. Certain activities will have a nominal fee to offset costs. Participants also will be able to take part in a free drawing for a Kindle Fire. Wilton Library is located at 137 Old Ridgefield Road in the heart of Wilton Center.
