Wednesday, Feb. 1 Soup(er) Bowls and Bean Soup, 4 – 5:30 p.m. Who doesn't love a bowl of warm bean soup on a cold winter day?  Come decorate your very own soup bowl and then fill it with the yummy dried bean soup ingredients to take home and make yourself or give it as a gift.    We will provide the soup bowl and the dry soup ingredients for you.   For ages 18+.  Registration is required or drop-in as space is available. Wednesday, Feb. 1 Exploring Virtual Reality with Google Cardboard, 6 – 7 p.m. Wondering what all the buzz about virtual reality is? Join us for a beginner's workshop where you'll get your own VR cardboard headset for your smartphone and learn how to explore various apps. Must have an Android 4.1 or higher OR an IOS 8.0 or higher. Wednesday, Feb. 1 Parent Information Series: Raise your Child to be a Resilient Adult, 7 – 8:30 p.m. Tracey Masella, LCSW, Adolescent Transitional Living Program Manager, Silver Hill Hospital will illustrate how helping a child to learn to live life on life’s terms will build resilience. Parents will learn how to foster problem solving skills and interpersonal effectiveness in their children by using mindfulness (where do we put our focus) and distress tolerance (how do we calm ourselves) techniques. This presentation is appropriate for parents of middle- and high-school children. There will be time for Q&A. Thursday, Feb. 2, 9, 16 & 23 Winter Poetry with Judson Scruton: Emily Dickinson—Pushing The Envelope, 10:30 – noon. Judson Scruton leads this 4-part Winter Poetry Seminar Series exploring the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Judson will be looking at and discussing some familiar and some lesser known Dickinson poems with the aid of new resources to see Dickinson’s poems as, in poet and critic Dan Chiasson words, a 'unique category of verbal notation, significant both for their literary power and for their physical appearance on the page.' Judson Scruton, M.A (The Johns Hopkins University, The Writing Seminars, specializing in poetry), has taught creative writing and literature at prep schools and universities. Friday, Feb. 3 “Perspectives: The Work of Four Female Artists” Art Exhibition/Reception, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Four local artists feature their works in this diverse exhibition at Wilton Library. The artists are Pam Ackley (New Canaan), Sarah Phillips (Wilton), Skye Riss (Wilton) and Dara Tomeo (Fairfield). From illustrations to sea and landscapes, from pencil drawings to explosions of color, the works represent styles, subject matter and medium as varied as the women themselves. The reception is open to the public. The exhibition runs through Feb. 24. The majority of the works are available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Wilton Library. Saturday, Feb. 4, 11, 18 & 25 Minecraft Club, 10 – noon. Kids ages 8 and up are invited to join Wilton Library’s Minecraft Computer Club. A server for Fairfield County has been set up with a virtual world where the Minecraft community in Wilton can meet and the club welcomes the enthusiasts. Please note: Minecraft is a subscription-based, online game. Players must bring their own laptop and create their own accounts. Saturday, Feb. 4 Take Your Child to the Library and See Living Dragons!, 2 – 3 p.m. Take your child to Wilton Library and see some Living Dragons from Riverside Reptiles! Where else but at Wilton Library can you and your family find books about dragons and then go and visit with some real ones! The new program 'Living Dragons” will introduce the public to a wide variety of different species of lizards that include geckos that can climb glass, skinks with bright blue tongues, a lizard without legs, a cousin of the Komodo Dragon, and a lizard with an impressive beard. Saturday, Feb. 4 Mother and Daughter Book Club, 3 – 4 p.m. Calling all daughters and mothers who want to read about heroines that are smart, brave, strong and kind. This month’s selection is Rules by Cynthia Lord. In this 2010 Nutmeg book, the heroine Catherine struggles with family, particularly her autistic younger brother. It seems like her mother and father only have time for him. Saturday, Feb. 4 Hot & Cool Jazz: Amina Figarova Sextet, 7:30 – 9 p.m. Composer and pianist Amina Figarova has toured extensively concentrating on an all-original repertoire for more than 20 years. The Amina Figarova Sextet has triumphed at the main stage of the Newport Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival; has performed in Chicago, Detroit, Paris, Amsterdam, and New York and in Wilton Library’s Brubeck Room in 2013. Sunday, Feb. 5 WGG/WLA Green Speaker Series: An Introduction to Electric Vehicles: Scott Thompson, 4 – 5 p.m. There is a lot of misperception about EVs, and this talk will cover some of these myths and counter them with real facts. Westport Electric Car Club member Scott Thompson will give the audience an Introduction to Electric Vehicles, covering EV basics and types of choices available. Monday, Feb. 6, 13 & 27 3D Designing Series for Teens, 4 - 5:30 p.m. The real magic in 3D printing happens when you're able to create your own designs. Over three weeks, teens in grades 7-12 will learn how to use Autodesk Fusion 360 to design three practical and functional products that can be 3D printed. Each lesson will build on the prior to introduce design concepts and best practices. Fusion 360 is a powerful design tool and free for students and hobbyists. Tuesday, Feb. 7 through Tuesday, March 28 Sound Explorers, 4 – 5 p.m. Long Island Sound is home to sharks, squid, sea turtles and more. The Maritime Aquarium's Traveling Teachers will be coming to the Wilton Library and doing a series of after-school Science programs. In the 8 sessions offered, students learn what shark skin feels like, and how to identify different kinds of crabs and jellies. Live animals and science experiments bring to life the animals of the Sound, the issues they face, and what we can all do to make a difference in their environment. Supported by the Amadeo Family. Sunday, Feb. 12 Connecticut's Own Concert: The Madera Winds - All American, 4 – 5 p.m. The Madera Winds, formed in 2012, is a blend of Connecticut Musicians who have performed over the last thirty years in other chamber music groups in Wilton as well as throughout Fairfield County. Ralph Kirmser (oboe) of Wilton and Janet Atherton (clarinet) of Norwalk had been founding members of the Prevailing Winds Quintet since the 1980s. Rosemary Dellinger has been the bassoonist for the Connecticut Little Symphony and teaches Spanish at Cider Mill School in Wilton.  Dr. Kerry Walker is professor of flute at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.  Zachary Glavin, horn, has performed with the Madera Winds for several years in Connecticut and currently resides in New York City. Sunday, Feb. 26 WLA/WHS - Scholarly Series - Finding Our Place : Evolving American Identity – Amy Trout, 4 – 5:30 p.m. at Wilton Library. In the 10th year of the collaboration between the Wilton Library and the Wilton Historical Society, the scholarly lecture series will focus on global perspective, US' place in the world, specifically WWI and its aftermath. Museum Curator Amy Trout will present “Connecticut and the Federal Art Project: Idealism and Identity during the 1930s.” She will focus on community identity expressed in and shaped by art. By examining the artwork created by Connecticut artists for the Federal Art Project (1935-1941), Ms. Trout will discuss Connecticut's identity during the decade of the Depression. Did the artwork reflect the harsh reality of the times or was it an idealized version of the past?   Amy Trout has been the Curator of the Connecticut River Museum in Essex, Connecticut since 2008.
