Wilton Police ask Thunder Lake Road and Pipers Hill Road area to monitor their credit reports after Identity Theft arrest

On 2/21/17 the Wilton Police Department was made aware of three (3) separate incidents of identity and/or mail theft from residents that reside on Thunder Lake Road.

The following day on 2/22/17 the department received a suspicious vehicle complaint from a resident on Pipers Hill Road who reported seeing a vehicle in the area of Pipers Hill Road on 2/21/17 and 2/22/17 wherein the operator of the vehicle appeared to be removing mail from neighbor’s mailboxes. The complainant provided a detailed description of the vehicle and operator.

With the information received, on 2/23/17 the department set-up surveillance in the north end of Wilton. On 2/23/17 at approximately noon, detectives observed a vehicle and operator in the area of Whipstick Road and Nod Hill Road matching the description of the suspicious vehicle complaint from the day prior. Upon stopping the vehicle the operator, identified as 26 year old Elijah Jamel Chin of Gardena, CA was found to have mail and a credit card in the name of a Pipers Hill Road resident in his lap. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed further evidence that Chin was engaged in the crime of Identity Theft.

Chin was taken into custody and charged with Larceny 6th, Identity Theft 3rd, Attempt at Trafficking in Personal Identifying Information, and Possession of less than ½ ounce of marijuana. He has been released on bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on 3/6/17.

This remains an ongoing investigation. The department is asking for residents, specifically in the Thunder Lake Road and Pipers Hill Road area of Wilton, to monitor their credit reports for any suspicious inquiries or accounts that they did not authorize. If a resident finds they are victim of identity theft, they should report the crime to their local police department. The department is also offering the following guidance to victims of identity theft:

 Keep a log of all conversations related to the crime and keep all correspondences related to the crime.

 Cancel any fraudulent or compromised accounts.

 Place a fraud alert on your credit report by contacting one of the three credit bureaus to report the crime:

Equifax (800) 525-6285, www.equifax.com; Experian (888) 397-3742, www.experian.com; or TransUnion (800) 680-7289, www.transunion.com.

Once a fraud alert is in place, you are entitled to free copies of your credit report.

 Visit the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) website IdentityTheft.gov, the federal government’s one-stop resource to help you report and recover from identity theft.
