From the first time I met Laura Kara she radiated “I love what I do and I can’t wait to share it with you!”

Laura discovered alternative medicine at a young age when her father was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and was told he only had six months to live. Laura’s father used a combination of alternative medicine including acupuncture and dietary changes to extend his life long after the original six month prediction.

Laura’s exposure to the benefits of alternative medicine had a huge impact on where she was going in her life. Laura studied Acupuncture based in Kiiko Matsumoto which is essentially diagnosis through palpation. 

Laura has over 15 years of experience and is excited to bring her passion to Bethel.  Most recently Laura has studied hands on based Orthopedic Acupuncture.  This form of acupuncture examines posture for signs and symptoms and works beautifully together with the palpitation method she practices.

Laura has a thriving practice in Westport and is excited to bring her expertise to her home community. 

Once Laura’s practice is well established in Bethel she hopes to offer a community style acupuncture clinic. This group session would involve auricular acupuncture, or ear acupuncture. Laura is especially eager to help veterans with PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder.  Laura has experienced the benefits of acupuncture on PTSD while volunteering at a free clinic set up to treat the first responders of Sandy Hook.

When I asked what the needles felt like Laura was excited to show me. She explained that acupuncture needles are super thin and it would actually take 25-30 acupuncture needles to fit into the size of a traditional hypodermic needle.  If I didn’t watch the process I would never know I had a needle in my forearm. There was zero pain involved. Within 5 to 10 seconds I felt a warm tingle that was followed by an intense relaxation I had never experienced before.  Laura added imagine that relaxation as a cumulative effect as each additional needle was added. She explained it as your nervous system shifting into a new pattern.  I might need to replace my next massage with an acupuncture treatment!

Laura admitted that acupuncture is not for everyone but I was surprised to learn acupuncture is used treat women’s menopausal issues, help balance hormonal issues, irritable bowel, heartburn, migraines and even infertility.
