Local Chapter of BNI Part of World's Largest Networking Group

Last week, members of the Super 7 Business Networking International (BNI) met and relaxed on the waterfront at Down the Hatch in Brookfield. To the average onlooker, they appear to be co-workers, casually enjoying Happy Hour.

In reality, they are part of a powerhouse of 150,000 worldwide lead generators, totaling 3.3 billion in revenue last year alone, according to the BNI website. They are business associates who adhere to the strict rules of the BNI organization. Meetings are held every week of the year. Miss two and you're out (unless you can send a substitute).

The Danbury area alone has four chapters which meet at different locations and times. Some chose to belong to the ones best suited to their schedules or office location. This particular group meets at 7:00 a.m. every Tuesday at  St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church in Brookfield. Another important note is that you have to be invited. If that doesn't happen, Connecticut has it's own Chapter Placement Specialist where you can apply to be selected. All of the dues are standard with a $400 annual price tag, plus the cost of the meeting location which may vary from group to group.

The formula is simple. Gather like-minded business owners of any size group, but with only one representation from one field of service. For instance: one realtor, one accountant, one insurance company, etc. The only variation is if they are residential verses commercial realty or health verses auto insurance, for instance.

Dr. Ivan Misner founded BNI, and is a New York Times best-selling author often called the "Father of Modern Networking."

According to Rick Van Akin, owner of Computer Troubleshooters in Brookfield, "Over 40% of my business is directly due to my BNI referrals."
