View the Winter Solstice Sky from New Pond Farm Observatory

As the Solstice approaches, more constellations are visible for a longer period of time. Plus this is the time of the Geminids Meteor Shower. Come join us as we explore the universe around us.

The Winter Solstice, also known as the shortest day of the year, occurs on Dec 22nd this year.   The ancients would have been watching intently for the solstice in hopes that the Sun would start to return and the Earth would be reborn.

This program gives you a glimpse at what the ancient astronomers were looking for as they anticipated the solstice.  Such long nights make for a longer and larger viewing window of the night sky.  This makes more constellations visible for a longer period of time.  The constellation Orion (picture), with its famous belt, is one of the winter constellations beginning to establish its dominates. If we are lucky we may be able to observe the Geminid meteor shower too.  Unlike most other meteor showers, the Geminids are associated not with a comet but with an asteroid - the 3200 Phaethon.  Come join us as we explore the universe around us.
