Getting your blood pressure checked on a regular basis helps to identify potential health risks and problems in the future. Blood pressure is a measurement of the pressure in your arteries during the active and resting phases of each heartbeat. If your blood pressure is high, it can cause a dangerous condition that puts extra stress and strain on your heart and arteries, which could lead to a cardiac event or stroke. Over time, that strain can cause your arteries to become thicker and less flexible and become weaker. If your high blood pressure goes uncontrolled, it is likely that it will damage your heart and other organs, and accelerate hardening of the arteries and build-up of cholesterol on arterial walls. Likewise, if your blood pressure is excessively low, you could be in danger of health issues, too. Low blood pressure does not allow delivery of enough oxygen and nutrients to vital organs, such as the heart, brain, and kidneys, and the organs will not function properly and may be temporarily or permanently damaged.
