Independent Bookstore Day is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April. This year, the event will be held on April 28, and Bethel's Byrd's Books will feature store specials, book signings, and giveaways from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
"We look forward to this day every year," says Byrd's Book owner Alice Hutchinson. "The day honors and reflects on what an independent bookstore can be in a community - gathering place, discovery center, coffee klatch, and a point of civic pride."
In 2017, there were 1,757 independent bookselling companies running 2,321 stores in the U.S. Every store is unique and independent, and so every party thrown on Independent Bookstore Day is different. In addition to authors, refreshments, kids' events, contests, and other fun stuff, Byrd's Books will offer special Independent Bookstore Day merchandise beginning that day.
The day's highlights include a book signing of "Willow's Way" by Bethel's best-selling author Sharon Struth beginning at 1 p.m. and of "Beneath the Apple Leaves" by Newtown's Harmony Verna at at 3 p.m. Verna has written for the Food Network, Modern Bride Magazine, Connecticut Woman Magazine and more. Audiobook site Libro.fm will be giving away 25 digital downloads to visitors to Byrd's Books throughout the day.
Byrd's Books is located at 126 Greenwood Avenue in Bethel. To register for the event, click here.
