For the second consecutive week, the rate of new cases per 100,000 population in Bethel dropped, falling from an all-time high of 217.5 cases/100k to 105.7. The test positivity measure also fell from 29% to 20% over the past two weeks.
While this is certainly good news, health authorities continue to urge residents to keep following all of the usual safety precautions. Please wear a mask when in public spaces and maintain social distancing protocols.
A word of caution: the Omicron variant, which is now dominant in our area, has been described by some as being “milder” than the Alpha or Delta variants. However, “milder” does not necessarily mean “mild.” The Omicron variant is still a potent disease that can result in so-called “long COVID” symptoms lasting for months, such as extreme fatigue and “brain fog.”
A final note: in addition to the safety protocols, still the best way to protect yourself is to get the vaccine and the booster. Currently in Bethel, 81% of our residents have initiated the vaccine process and 72% are now fully vaccinated, but only 35% have received the booster. The booster is known to be highly effective at preventing an infection, as well as reducing the risk of severe symptoms if you do get it. Free vaccines and boosters are widely available at area pharmacies and clinics. For more information on vaccines and boosters, please click here:
