Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Dr. Mike's Ice Cream!

Four questions with David Nussbaum, owner of Dr. Mike's Ice Cream.

Why did you start your business?

Dr. Mike's opened in 1975 in the rear of the old Knights of Columbus lodge in the heart of downtown Bethel. It remains in the same location today and we still use the founder's original recipes to manufacture our ice cream by hand. I purchased Dr. Mike's in 2020. I am only the third owner of the business.

What is your best-selling product/service?

We are known for our Chocolate Lace and Cream ice cream. Chocolate Lace is hardened caramel candy covered in dark chocolate. The candy was invented in Bethel and was first used in our ice cream 48 years ago. We sell more Chocolate Lace than any other flavor. We also make a very unique Pumpkin flavor in September. It stays on the menu through Thanksgiving. People wait with anticipation for Pumpkin to be made every year.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We source as many ingredients as possible locally and we sell our ice cream to restaurants and other distributors in the area.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Yes. During the pandemic, we installed take-out windows as opposed to having customers come inside the shop to purchase their ice cream. It was a very successful move for us. It improved ordering efficiency and made both our customers and employees feel more comfortable. We are very pleased with the results.
