Bethel’s Byrd’s Books’ October Book Groups to Read Hollywood to Halloween

Bethel’s Byrd’s Books’ monthly book clubs always choose decidedly eclectic and unique subjects to explore.  Their History, SciFi Fantasy, and General book groups are free to the public and welcome all to join in spirited discussion. Books are available to purchase in paperback, only rarely hardbound. The book groups are now meeting in person and on Zoom (see links at ByrdsBooks.com).

The History Book Group meets every 2nd Thursday of the month. On Thursday, October 12th at 7:30pm, its selection is When the Irish Invaded Canada: The Incredible True Story of the Civil War Veterans Who Fought for Ireland’s Freedom, by Christopher Klein. Proclaimed as “vivid, engrossing storytelling” by The Irish Times, the book is an inspiring, lively and often comic story of fighting for what’s right in the world, even against impossible odds.

On Tuesday, October 17th at 7:30pm, the SciFi Fantasy Book Group will discuss Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, edited by Maurice Hindle. The classic was born out of a ghost story writing competition on a story afternoon in Geneva at a gathering hosted by Lord Byron. The SciFi Fantasy Book Group meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month.

The General Book Group meets every 3rd Thursday of the month. On Thursday, October 19th at 7:30pm, Mercury Pictures Presents, by the award-winning author ofA Constellation of Vital Phenomena, Anthony Marra, is spotlighted. Set in 1940’s Hollywood up to and on the eve of America’s entry into WW II, The New York Times called the book, both “gorgeous” and “sublime. The author plans to join this discussion by Zoom.
