Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community.

Meet Linda Tran, MS, LPC, NCC, founder of Interpersonal Wellness.

Why did you start your business?

I started the psychotherapy practice in 2017, and decided to expand it to become a group practice in August of 2024. I did this because I found that there were not enough psychotherapists available to treat the members of our community, particularly those that have a history of trauma. My practice specializes in treating trauma and interpersonal issues.

What is your best selling product or service?

The most requested psychotherapy service is Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). It's an evidence based treatment that helps desensitize clients to upsetting memories, and properly encodes the memories, which allows us to view it from different perspectives and integrate that information to our existing knowledge and memory bank. Otherwise, the trauma is not properly encoded, resulting in it being triggered easily, leaving clients in a heightened state of arousal, highly distraught, acting as if there is danger present, often without client's conscious awareness of this. When our safety systems are engaged like that, it shuts down all other bodily functions that are not crucial to survival. This presents as: not being able to execute tasks, calm themselves down, trust people, accept love & compassion from others, & being compassionate with ourselves. This results in not functioning at our best at work or school, feeling disconnected from others, being highly anxious, depressed, feeling a great sense of shame, ruminating over the past, not being able to let things go, and then hurting the people we love.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business in terms of products and services? Can you name them?

We rely on many small businesses for support such as local primary care doctors, psychiatrists (Sterling Institute of Neuropsychiatry, Behavioral Medicine & Counseling Center), nutritionists, massage therapists (Western CT Therapeutic Massage), Reiki providers (like Michelle Weinstein, LADC), yoga studios, health food stores (Soulber Kitchen), and even cosmetic providers (Britt's Nail Bar & Nail Bar Collective). We additionally treat our local first responders who have been traumatized through their line of work (Local Firefighters, Police Officers, Nurses, other mental health professionals, etc.)

Have you reimagined your small business?

My team and I have redefined the mental health business by specializing in neuropsychology to treat trauma of all degrees, mental health conditions, and resulting interpersonal issues to address clients holistically, rather than offering generic services from counselors that use cookie cutter methods.
