Earlier this year, every community in America was confronted with the difficult truth about racism in our nation, following the global outcry to the death of George Floyd. It is clear that all of our communities must do more to recognize the damaging effects that systemic racism affects every part of daily life, from housing, to education, to health and career opportunities and so on. It is a fact that race remains today the number-one predictor of success and well being in the United States.
Since the events of this past spring, the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM, of which the Town of Bethel is a member) has been working to create a series of workshops designed to help bring awareness of systemic racism and begin conversations that are necessary, but that some people find uncomfortable,
The first of these seminars will be held on Tuesday, October 20th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and is open to the public.
All Bethel residents are invited to participate.
“CCM invites you to its virtual CCM CARES (Communities Advancing Racial Equity Series). These forums will take that crucial first step of starting the conversation. Each 90-minute session will feature a panel of community and municipal leaders, covering topics such as policing issues, local public education, public health and affordable housing, with an open dialogue to follow. We encourage you to invite your community to participate as well by providing them with the attached flyer containing a link to register via Zoom (the forums will also be broadcast on Facebook Live).”
