Bethel’s Byrd’s Books Hosts Discussion of Antarctic Exploration on Sunday, February 5

Bethel’s Byrd’s Books Hosts Discussion of Antarctic Exploration with CT Author-Illustrators Jennifer Thermes & Karen Romano Young

Bethel’s Byrd’s Books will host a discussion of CT author-illustrator Jennifer Thermes’ new book, The Indestructible Tom Crean: Heroic Explorer of the Antarctic on Sunday, February 5th at 4:00pm.

Jennifer will be joined in conversation with fellow CT author-illustrator and Antarctic adventurer Karen Romano Young. Aimed at children ages 5 to 8 year old,The Indestructible Tom Crean reveals the incredible true stories of Crean's adventures on the Discovery, Terra Nova, and Endurance expeditions. When the Endurance becomes trapped in the frozen sea and sinks, it is up to Crean and several others to go for help. Both authors have been acclaimed for their works of non-fiction for children, though their works also resonate with adults who have a passion for roving.

“Thermes' past work as a map illustrator is employed to great effect here . . .” notes Booklist. “Created with watercolor, colored pencil, and salt, the artwork features a soft, sunny palette that keeps the story upbeat, even during blizzards and perilous times.”

Jennifer Thermes is a map illustrator and the author-illustrator of Manhattan: Mapping the Story of an Island, which was an Orbis Pictus Honor Book and a Bank Street College of Education Best Children's Book of the Year. Karen Romano Young is the award-winning writer and illustrator of Antarctica: The Melting Continent, as well as the groundbreaking graphic novel Doodlebug and the forthcoming graphic nonfiction Diving for Deep-Sea Dragons
