Bethel’s Byrd’s Books is excited to welcome Jim Smith back to Byrd's Books to discuss his new book, Our Dog Yogi With Other Stories True and Mostly True on Wednesday, May 3rd at 7:00pm. Grit, love, imagination, the challenges and pleasures of friendship, and the depths of family lore infuse the short stories in this collection. Among his subjects, Jim Smith writes about family, friends and baseball, the cool deep waters of Canandaigua Lake, and the deep-rooted pull of Ireland. In his stories, the author writes about the choices we make in life, or the choices that maybe are made for us. The veteran journalist has enjoyed a career of 44 years, becoming an inductee into the New England Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2012.

Jim has worked as a reporter and editor at the Hartford Courant, and has led the Connecticut Post, The Day of New London, The News-Times of Danbury, the Record-Journal of Meriden, The New Britain Herald and The Bristol Press to New England Newspaper of the Year Awards. He won the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ Distinguished Writing Award for a selection of columns on the First Amendment, which were published in "Best Newspaper Writing 2003” put out annually by the Poynter Institute. He earned his master’s degree in humanities/writing from Wesleyan University, studied at Syracuse University Graduate School of Journalism, and earned a B.A. in American History from SUNY Brockport.
