Bethel’s Byrd’s Books Keeps You on the Edge with November Book Groups

Every month, Bethel’s Byrd’s Books hosts History, SciFi Fantasy, and General book groups, free to the public and welcoming all to join in lively discussion. For convenience, the popular community hub makes book group selections available in paperback. Book groups are now meeting in person at Byrd’s Books, located at 178 Greenwood Avenue across from the Bethel Public Library, and on Zoom by request.

The History Book Group meets every 2nd Thursday of the month. On November 9th at 7:30pm, readers will discuss a powerful work of visual nonfiction about an Apache family struggling to protect sacred land from a multinational mining corporation. Oak Flat: A Fight for Sacred Land in the American West by MacArthur “Genius” Lauren Redniss features deep reporting and haunting artwork, and reflects “proof of art’s purpose: to expand minds, to promote beauty, and to make change.” (National Public Radio)

On Tuesday, November 21st at 7:30pm, the SciFi Fantasy Book Group dives into A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, the first in The Schlomance series, taking a fresh stab at the backdrop of a magical boarding school, where things don’t just go bump in the night, they tend to maim and murder the students. “The magic and mystery of this chillingly lovely novel will appeal to both young audiences and adult fans of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books…” (Library Journal) The SciFi Fantasy Book Group meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month.

The General Book Group meets every 3rd Thursday of the month. On November 16th at 7:30pm, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig will take the conversation to somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe. There, a library contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? The New York Times wrote the book “might be exactly what’s wanted in these troubled and troubling times.”

Author discussions and Book Group gatherings are regularly added to Byrd’s Books’ calendar of events at ByrdsBooks.com are Tuesdays to Saturdays 10:00am to 6:00pm, Sundays 12:00 noon to 4;00pm, Closed Mondays. For directions to the store or more information, call Byrd’s Books at 203-730-2973.
