Byrd’s Books Hosts Evening of Poetry With Bethel Poet Laureate’s First Book

His favorite poets include Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, and he admires the Beat poetry of Allen Ginsberg and Laurence Ferlinghetti. Now, Bethel’s current Poet Laureate, Rick McGee, evokes them with a reading from the first published book of his work, Green Latitudes.

On Friday, December 15th at 7:00pm, Bethel’s Byrd’s Books will host the town’s poet as he guides listeners to places where identity, desire, joy, and fatherhood might exist in a world that can be hostile to all of these things.

In his debut collection, Rick Magee explores the places that shaped him and the places that scarred him, while he also searches for the places that can restore him. The poems of Green Latitudes arise from specific landscapes and small moments, standing as tiny signposts to navigate a path to peace and acceptance.

Rick McGee grew up in California and started writing poetry at the age of 9. He continued to write through college at the University of California at Berkeley, where he got a degree in English. He later received an MA in English at Cal Poly, then moved to New York to complete his studies in English. After receiving his PhD, he began teaching at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, where he teaches literature, poetry, and food writing. His work can be found in The Madrigal andThe American Journal of Poetry, among others. He lives in Bethel with his wife Rebecca, who is also an English professor, and his son Cormac, who wants to be an author when he grows up.
