January 2024 begins with exciting Adult Events at the Bethel Public Library, located at 189 Greenwood Avenue.
We begin with “Scams and More Scams: An Expert’s Tips on How to Avoid Them” on Thursday, January 4th at 6:30pm. A member of the Bethel Police Department’s Detective Bureau will discuss how we can recognize scams; how we can avoid them; and what to do if we have been scammed. Scams have been in the news lately, and this talk will keep us on our toes.
The next program on Thursday, January 11th, at 6:30 pm, will bring back popular presenter, Maria Xavier, who will talk on “Put Your Retirement Plan to Work”. Retirement can mean different things to different people. Maybe you want to travel, volunteer, start your own business or go back to school. Whatever you decide, you need to be financially prepared. Taking advantage of your employer-sponsored retirement plan is one way to help prepare for whatever kind of retirement you have in mind. Maria, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, enjoys teaching at libraries to help spread knowledge on how to plan using money as a tool. Her enthusiasm and knowledge shine through her presentation!
On Thursday, January 18th at 6:30pm, we welcome Town Historian, Patrick Wild, who is following “Bethel Highways and Byways: A History of the Town’s Roads, Streets, Districts and Forgotten Places”. This event will focus on the origins of Bethel's oldest roads, the early development of its five distinct districts, and the local place names that have mostly been forgotten. Mr. Wild, who has written several books about Bethel, hopes this presentation will jog your memory, or provide new information on Bethel that you hadn’t known.
The last Thursday in January (January 25th) will focus on “12 Tips to Manage Anxiety”. When faced with anxiety, what can one do before and during to help reduce and relieve anxiety and regain balance, calm, and clarity? Come learn about anxiety and what you can do to help prevent it and to manage it if it occurs. Our popular presenter, Wendy Hurwitz, MD, states everyone will come away with information, tools, and techniques to help manage anxiety and help regain and restore balance and calm. A graduate of Yale University of Medicine, Dr. Wendy Hurwitz is a nationally recognized expert on stress. A former medical researcher for ABC News, Dr. Hurwitz is an expert in two fields: Mind/Body Medicine and Energy Medicine
