Winter Storm Update from DESPP/DEMHS

Heavy snowstorm entering the state at this time.

Winter snowstorm warning in effect for most of the state.

At Noon radar showed a band of moderate snow across Central CT.  Another heavy band of precipitation is approaching the Connecticut coast at this time.  Any mix should change to all snow as the snow intensity increases over the next few hours.

This Afternoon: Snow intensity increasing and becoming heavy at times by 1:00 PM in Southwestern CT and into the Hartford/Middletown areas by 4:00 PM.  The snow has the potential to become very heavy with snowfall rates of 1” – 3” per hour especially in southwestern CT after 2:00 PM and across the rest of the state by the rush hour.  A rain/snow line is expected to move into the southeastern Connecticut coastline by 5:00 PM.  The impact on the afternoon rush hour is forecast to be major with heavy or very heavy snow falling across most of the state, several inches of snow on most roads and near blizzard conditions.  Highs are forecast to be in the low 30’s with Northeast winds gusting to 30 MPH at times inland and to 30 – 50 MPH at times along the coast.  The heavy wet snow combined with the strong winds are likely to cause power outages.

This Evening and Overnight: Snow heavy at times is forecast to change to a mix of rain southeast of a line from Old Saybrook to Norwich by 7:00 PM.  The impact on evening travel is expected to range from minor in southeastern CT to Major in the Hartford / Stamford areas and the NW hills with a deep snowpack on most roads.  Any mix is expected to change back to snow by late evening and the snow is forecast to taper off to lighter snow between 10:00 PM and Midnight.  Light snow is expected to continue overnight and end completely between 4:00 – 6:00 AM Thursday morning.  There is still expected to be a minor to moderate impact on the Thursday morning rush hour.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to closely monitor this storm.

The next update will be sent out at 2:00 PM.
