Unfortunately, the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant has accelerated in Connecticut and in our area. According to the latest medical and epidemiological research, it can be spread as easily as the common cold and is infecting a greater proportion of young people, including children than the earlier strain. Although vaccinations remain highly effective at preventing serious symptoms, it is still possible for vaccinated people to catch and spread the virus. Unvaccinated people are particularly vulnerable.
At present over 95% of new hospitalizations and fatalities due to the disease are among unvaccinated people. As a consequence of these factors, it will again be necessary to enforce a mask policy in all public buildings in accordance with the most recent CDC recommendations.
Effective Wednesday, August 11th, use of face masks that cover both mouth and nose will be mandatory regardless of vaccination status when visiting town hall and other town buildings.
Face masks will be provided at the main entrances to Town Hall for visitors who may need one. Although access to the building is not being restricted, please be reminded that each office has the right to ask visitors to wait in the hallway, if necessary, to prevent crowding and maintain social distancing. Also, some offices, notably the building, land use, and health departments, require advance appointments for certain functions. Please refer to the town website for details. We also encourage people to use the outdoor dropbox and online services for contact-free service.
BETHEL BUSINESS COMMUNITY ADVISED TO FOLLOW SUIT
Last week Gov. Lamont issued Executive Order #13A, which, among other things, reaffirms the right of business owners to require the use of masks, if they so choose. We strongly advise all Bethel businesses to require masks in all indoor spaces where social distancing is difficult or impossible.
Lastly, we continue to encourage all of our residents to get the vaccine. It is proven to be safe and highly effective at preventing life-threatening cases of the disease.
