Project Purple Week will take place next week at Bethel High School

BHS will celebrates Project Purplon Wednesday, Jan., 24th, and Friday, Jan., 26th.

THP Project Purple is an initiative of The Herren Project, a non-profit foundation established by former NBA basketball player, Chris Herren that assists individuals and families struggling with addiction. The THP Project Purple initiative was launched to break the stigma of addiction, bring awareness to the dangers of substance abuse and encourage positive decision making to navigate life’s challenges.

The THP Project Purple initiative concept was developed when Chris spoke at a local high school in 2011 and in the front row of students, a few were wearing Purple shirts. After Chris shared his story, one of the purple shirts raised her hand and stood up to speak. As snickering and laughter could be heard throughout the auditorium, the student said “Thank you, Mr. Herren, for validating what we do. We are the sober students of this high school and each year we take a pledge to not use drugs or alcohol.”

Chris was captured by the courage it took to stand up and share the symbolism of the purple shirts. He was inspired by their courage to make a difference for adolescents across the United States.

On Wednesday, Jan. 24th, students will read statistics in the beginning of class with the intention of raising awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug use in adolescence. During the lunch waives the club, Wildcats Are Responsible, will be giving away t-shirts to students that sign a pledge about supporting the mission.

On Friday, Jan. 26th, W.A.R. will be asking staff and students to wear something purple to show support for the cause. Friday NIGHT, Jan., 26th at 7PM, come out and join us in supporting the mission with a PURPLE OUT.

The Girls’ Basketball Team will be hosting Kolbe and the athletic department will have a PURPLE OUT. We will be broadcasting the game and during the breaks will again be reading awareness statistics. During halftime, there will be some games and prizes! Please come and show your support!!
